For a much easier method of drilling hinges, search the online builders manual for drilling hinges. It is located in the wing section for flaps and ailerons, but it works for all hinges. We laid out the hole pattern on the skins for the wings, you can use that pattern for all hinges. You just have to layout the first hole manually, and the few non-standard hole spacing.

Thanks Rick, great idea! I’ll use that on the next elevator. Finished the right one, working on the left side now.

Barry

Here are some pictures of mine with the drilled yardstick used as the template for drilling the hinges. 1/4" from each end and 1" between all the rest.

Barry,
Take another look at your Horz drawing detail P-T-HT. Look for the Hing-Half Detail cut away (right side of drawing with the circle) notice the hinge will be OFFSET on the horizontal to allow the horizontal and elevator hinges/parts to line up.
Also notice the center of each hinge eyelet is 1". Hope this helps clear this up for you.

Barry, I don't quite understand your question.
I reviewed my plans, page 8 and 13, paying attention to all the detail drawings. If you locate your hinge per plans on both the horizontal stab and the elevator they should line up properly relative to one another when you connect them together with your hinge pin.
All the proper dimensions are there, just go over them a few times until you have a complete picture of how everything falls together.
Don't fret too much over that 1/4" measurement on the plans, it's pretty much just a reference dimension to get you to properly center your holes relative to each lug. Each rivet will be spaced 1" from one another, centered on it's respective lug.
I hope this helps.

Hinge rivet spacing

Post by Barry »

Just wondering if anyone has advise on the elevator hinge rivet spacing. The plans call out 1/4” from the edge and 1” from there. My question is that according to the plans, the riots are to be offset between where they attach to the elevator and where they attach to the horizontal. With that being done, the 1/4” spacing can’t be accomplished on the stabilizer side? Thanks for any help.
