Hi Jinkers, I know I am replying to an old post, but if you can remember, I would like to ask whether you cleared the use of AN rivets with SPA?
Construction manual says AN rivets to replace blind rivets only in skin to ribs?
"Flush solid aircraft rivets - MS20426AD3 (ACS calls them AN426AD3) (only for attaching skins)"

I would like to use AN solid rivets for the horizontal and vertical spar build up, they seem to be more of a "solid" choice for that than pulled rivets? I own a hydro pneumatic squeezer and I have been trying to find good excuses to put it to good use :)

The Dayton 4X577 (red handles) compared to a Craftsman pop rivet gun. It gets into some pretty tight spaces.

I used Tony Spicer's technique, which was to lean the rib briefly to get a straight shot on the rivet:

I used AN470 (AN426 when flush surface required) solid rivets and a hand squeezer for the all the rib to spar connections.

Bob,
I used a pop rivet tool (PRP26A Pop Tools) to get in tight places like this. This one works great but its no cheap. Google PRP26A Pop Tools.

Bob-
Put the rivet in hole, bend stem a little away from rib, put gun on and pull!

good Luck!

Bob,
I use a Dayton model- 4X577 hand rivet gun for tight spaces. I'd like to attach a picture of it, but every time I try to load a picture, it tells me the file is to big.

Rib to spar riveting on the horizontal tail

Post by bob_arthur »

How is everyone riveting the ribs to the spars on the horizontal tail?
The plans call for the factory heads of the rivets to be on the interior of the structure and the shop heads to be on the forward side of the front spar and the aft side of the rear spar. I cannot get a pneumatic riveter or hand squeeze riveter in there to do the job.
I cannot keep the factory heads of the rivets flat against the surface while trying to rivet.
What did I miss?

Here is a picture of my problem.
